๐Ÿž๏ธ Stardew Valley Beginner's Guide: Day 1 Complete Walkthrough

Reference: Stardew Valley Wiki - Getting Started ยท r/StardewValley Beginner FAQ

๐Ÿ“‹ What This Guide Covers

  • Pre-game setup: Character creation & farm type selection
  • Morning routine: Wake up, watch TV, and check your mail
  • Afternoon exploration: Tour your farm and visit Pelican Town
  • Evening fishing: Your first money-making session
  • Newbie pitfalls to avoid
  • Optional: Rushing the mines on day 1

๐ŸŽฎ 1. Critical Choices Before You Start

When you first open the game, the main menu has three key decisions:

Character Creation

Your appearance choices affect nothing mechanically โ€” pick whatever you like. The only meaningful decision is pet preference: choose between a cat or a dog. This affects which pet bowl item you interact with but has no gameplay impact beyond aesthetics.

Farm Type Selection โ€” The Most Important Decision

Farm Type Focus Difficulty Best For
๐ŸŒฑ Standard Farm All-around Easy First-time players โ€” largest tillable area
๐ŸŒฒ Forest Farm Foraging + berry bushes Easy Forage-heavy playstyles
๐Ÿชจ Hill-top Farm Mining Medium Players who want more mining access
๐Ÿ๏ธ Wilderness Farm Combat Hard Monsters spawn at night
๐Ÿชด Four Corners Farm Multiplayer Easy Co-op players, organized layouts
๐Ÿชท Beach Farm Fishing Hard Limited sprinklers โ€” advanced only
๐Ÿœ๏ธ Meadowlands Farm Animals Medium 1.6 new farm type โ€” starter animals + grass

For your first playthrough: Choose Standard Farm. It has the most space and no gimmicks. The Forest Farm is also beginner-friendly if you like foraging.

Tip: Once you pick a farm type, you cannot change it without starting a new save. The Meadowlands Farm (added in 1.6) gives you two starter chickens and a coop already built โ€” a great choice if you want to jump straight into animals.

๐ŸŒ… 2. Day 1 Morning Routine

Wake Up (6:00 AM)

You arrive in Stardew Valley via bus, greeted by Robin and Lewis. Follow the brief tutorial cutscene, then you are free to explore.

Watch TV (Essential!)

Channel What You Get Priority
๐ŸŽค Fortune Teller Daily luck forecast Must-watch before mining
๐ŸŒค๏ธ Weather Report Tomorrow's weather Important for planning
๐Ÿณ Queen of Sauce Cooking recipes (Sunday reruns on Wed) Collect every new recipe
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Livin' Off The Land Farming tips Useful for brand new players

Day 1 Specific: Check the weather โ€” if it's going to rain tomorrow, you can skip watering and spend the day mining or fishing instead.

Check Your Mail

You receive several letters on day 1: - Introduction to the Valley โ€” from Lewis - The Adventurer's Guild invitation โ€” from Marlon - A package from your grandfather (contains 15 parsnip seeds and 15g)

๐ŸŒพ 3. Afternoon: Clear & Plant

Clearing the Farm

You start with an overgrown farm full of: - Weeds โ†’ Mixed Seeds (save these), Fiber - Twigs & branches โ†’ Wood - Small stones โ†’ Stone - Large stumps & boulders โ†’ need an upgraded axe/pickaxe (leave for later)

Day 1 clearing priorities: 1. Clear enough space for 15 parsnip seeds (about 20 tiles) 2. Clear a path to your front door 3. Chop enough wood for a chest (50 wood) and fence (optional) 4. Leave large stumps and boulders โ€” you can't break them day 1

Planting Parsnips

Plant all 15 parsnip seeds. Here's why:

Factor Parsnip Other Crops Notes
Grow Time 4 days 6-12 days Harvest before Spring 5
Seed Cost 20g 50-150g Affordable for starting capital
Sell Price 35g 60-250g Quick reinvestment cycle
Water Daily Daily Same requirements

Planting strategy: 1. Hoe 15 tiles of soil (right-click with hoe equipped) 2. Apply fertilizer if you have any (optional day 1) 3. Plant seeds (right-click with seeds selected) 4. Water each tile (right-click with watering can equipped)

Tip: Leave at least 2 empty tiles for mixed seeds from weeds. You will also want room for Spring Onion foraging patches along the river south of your farm โ€” those respawn daily and sell for 8-24g each.

๐ŸŽฃ 4. Evening: Fishing For Starter Gold

After planting and watering, head to Pelican Town via the bus stop path (south of your farm).

Get Your Fishing Rod

  1. Walk to Beach (east from town square, then south)
  2. Talk to Willy at the fish shop (south pier)
  3. He will give you the Bamboo Pole for free after a short tutorial
  4. Buy Bait (5g each from Willy's shop) โ€” 20-30 pieces is enough for day 1

Where to Fish on Day 1

Location Common Fish Difficulty Best For
๐ŸŒŠ Ocean (Beach) Sardine, Anchovy, Herring Medium Best prices
๐Ÿž๏ธ River (Town) Chub, Sunfish, Perch Easy Beginners
๐ŸŒฒ Mountain Lake Carp, Bullhead Medium Good variety

Beginner Recommendation: Start at the river near Leah's Cottage (south of town). The fish are easier to catch, and chub sell for a reliable 50g each.

Fishing Mini-Game Tips

Problem Solution
๐ŸŽฏ Fish bounces too fast Tap, don't hold โ€” short bursts keep the bar steady
๐ŸŸ Fish moves to top/bottom Let the bar float down naturally, then burst back
โšก Small fish icon Harder to catch โ€” skip these, focus on medium fish
๐Ÿคš Green bar too small Level up fishing skill = bigger bar

โ›๏ธ 5. Optional: Rush the Mines Day 1

If you prefer combat over fishing, you can reach the mines on day 1 with a focused sprint:

  1. Skip fishing โ€” go straight to the Adventurer's Guild (east of town, north of the mines entrance)
  2. Talk to Marlon to register
  3. Enter the mines (requires Rusty Sword from Marlon)
  4. Clear floors 1-5 for copper ore and gems

Rewards for rushing: - Copper ore for tool upgrades days earlier - Gemstones that sell for 100-300g each - Experience toward mining skill - Bug Meat drops โ€” usable in 1.6 recipes

Tip: Don't overdo it. If your health drops below 50%, eat or leave. Passing out in the mines costs you 10% of your gold and you might lose items. Day 1 stamina is limited โ€” mine until you have 10-15 copper ore, then head home.

โŒ Common Newbie Pitfalls

Mistake Consequence Solution
โŒ Buying too many seeds Can't afford fishing rod or food Stick to the 15 free parsnips + 2-3 extra
โŒ Cutting all grass No hay for animals later Leave at least 50 grass tiles uncut
โŒ Selling all resources Can't build chests/fences day 2 Keep 50 wood + 50 stone minimum
โŒ Ignoring the TV Miss weather forecast Watch TV every morning, no exceptions
โŒ Overworking stamina Pass out at 2:00 AM, lose gold Stop farming by 10 PM, save energy for last-minute fishing
โŒ Foraging but not saving Need Spring Onions for community bundle Store 1 of each foragable before selling
โŒ Not talking to NPCs Miss early relationship opportunities Talk to everyone you pass โ€” costs no stamina
โŒ Throwing away artifacts/donations Delays museum completion Check the museum before selling anything marked "artifact"

โœ… Day 1 Summary Checklist

โœ… Task Status
โœ… Complete prologue cutscene
โœ… Check TV (weather + fortune)
โœ… Read all mail
โœ… Clear 20+ farm tiles
โœ… Plant and water 15 parsnips
โœ… Craft at least 1 chest
โœ… Visit Pelican Town
โœ… Talk to Willy โ†’ get fishing rod
โœ… Catch 3-5 fish
โœ… Save 50 wood + 50 stone
โœ… Sleep before 12:00 AM (to avoid low energy next day)

Final tip: Day 1 in Stardew Valley is about foundation, not perfection. You don't need to min-max โ€” just plant your parsnips, catch a few fish, and enjoy the atmosphere. The game rewards consistent daily progress far more than perfect day 1 execution. Save your min-max energy for Spring 5+, when you have a feel for the game and some gold in your pocket.
